Île d’Orleans is always bigger than visitors expect. When you think of an island off of a city then you think it is going to be just a small hour-long detour. However, thankfully that is not the case here. The island is around 70km around the main route. With so many sweet tooth delicacies on your tour of the island – the locals know how to keep you energized to keep on seeing more!
Ever heard of Nougat? It’s a French treat and originally translated from Latin means ‘nutbread’. Like a chewy, harder marshmallow this sweet is mixed with nuts and other fruits to give you a not so common sugar fix. The island is home to the La Nougaterie, where you will not be disappointed with the selection.
Île d’Orléans is famous for its agriculture and rich growing soils. Apple trees flourish on this land and producing the nicest apple juice we have ever tasted. The combination of apples gives you the perfect mix of sweet and sour and will keep that thirst quenched until the next stop. Stop by the Polyculture Plante in Sainte Pétronille and pick up a bottle or two for the road.
On both ends of the island, you will find the Chocolaterie de l’Ile d’Orleans where you can pick up some Belgium influenced chocolates as well as some incredible ice cream combinations. They have a specialty of soaking your ice cream in melted chocolate to create a mixture of taste sensations like salted caramel or maple syrup chocolates. Believe me, you won’t want to miss this one!
In Saint-Jean then be sure to stop by La Boulange to pick up some of their homemade loaves of bread and pastries. They also have an array of locally produced jams and spreads in case you want to take a sweet keepsake home with you to enjoy in the comfort of your own kitchen after your vacation is finished.
