Hidden within the breathtaking deciduous forest of Île d’Orléans lies a remarkable treasure: the 9-hole golf course of Club de Golf Orléans. With an incredible heritage spanning over 150 years, this course is celebrated as the oldest golf course in North America. Its legacy began modestly as a private 3-hole course, established by the Dunn family, who were among the island’s early settlers. Today, it remains partly owned by the Dunn family and stands as a historic gem nestled within the picturesque municipality of Saint-Pétronille.
Golf, Camaraderie, and Community: Insights from the Club President
We had the privilege of speaking with the President, Mr Pierre Gosselin ( Now Mr. Jean-Pierre Thibault, since 2020) of the club, who shared fascinating insights into its history, culture, and unique charm. According to him, the club’s “intimacy and camaraderie” set it apart from any other golf experience. With a membership base of just 170 core members, the atmosphere is less about intense competition and more about building lasting friendships. “It’s like a family gathering,” the President remarked. “People come to enjoy the sport and catch up with one another, making every visit a social occasion.”
About the Dunn Family
The history of the Club de Golf Orléans is deeply intertwined with that of the Dunn family. This prominent anglophone family, deeply rooted in Quebec and Île d’Orléans for over six generations, established the first three holes of what became North America’s first golf course on their estate in 1868. The Dunn family, active in Quebec’s business community, has consistently contributed to the region’s social and cultural life. They have also generously supported various philanthropic organizations, a tradition they continue to uphold to this day.
Charm and Tradition, Thanks to the Passionate Volunteers!
What adds to the club’s charm is its reliance on passionate volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the course and uphold its welcoming, old-school hospitality. The course’s 9-hole layout makes it perfect for both seasoned golfers seeking a relaxed game and beginners looking for an approachable introduction to the sport. While its undulating terrain and rustic feel might differ from the meticulously groomed greens of modern clubs, these characteristics contribute to the unique allure of playing at Club de Golf Orléans. The course’s natural imperfections and historical aura create an experience that’s as enchanting as it is entertaining.
As you step onto the grounds, it’s impossible not to feel the history surrounding you. The ancient trees towering over the course seem to whisper tales of bygone eras, and the friendly vibe among players and staff creates an atmosphere of warmth and nostalgia. Although the original clubhouses were tragically lost to fires over the years, the spirit of the club’s rich past endures. Walking the grounds, you’ll quickly realize that Club de Golf Orléans is more than just a golf course — it’s a living piece of history.
