Strawberries and other small fruits thrive on Île d’Orléans. The light and sandy soil, mixed with the refreshing breeze from the St. Lawrence River, ensures that the island produces, in my opinion, the best strawberries in Canada — and dare I say it, the world.
The strawberries from the island became so famous that it was necessary to protect their identity. Producers applied for and received a protected designation of origin for Île d’Orléans strawberries. This means that no one outside the island can market their berries under the island’s name. Every case of strawberries you buy from the island carries an authentic stamp, guaranteeing you the finest strawberry experience. Plus, scientific studies have proven these strawberries are better for you than any others.
A Conversation with Local Farmer Léonce Plante
We had the pleasure of chatting with Léonce Plante, a renowned strawberry farmer on the island. As a fourth-generation farmer, Léonce and his family have dedicated their lives to cultivating these exceptional berries. Following in his father’s footsteps, Léonce takes pride in preserving the tradition. As he says, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
“There’s a certain pride in living and producing something unique from this special island,” Léonce shared while standing in front of his quaint storefront on Chemin Royal, the island’s main road. Walking into his shop feels like being welcomed into someone’s living room for an afternoon coffee. When you leave, you carry with you the freshest and sweetest produce Île d’Orléans has to offer.
The produce at this little roadside stand is so fresh that you might see farmhands picking strawberries to be sold the very next day. From the farm to your table in less than 24 hours — no wonder these berries leave a lasting impression.
